McDermott, McDonald Sweep Big West Conference Awards for Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Following each of their 3,000-meter steeplechase performances at the UCSB Tri-Meet this past weekend, Cal Poly's Sean McDermott and Maddie McDonald were selected by the Big West as the conference's Track Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.

McDermott, a junior from Kings Beach, Calif. who transferred to the Mustangs from Cuesta, won the event by a margin of 8.75 seconds Saturday in Montecito.

He clocked a career-best time of 9:04.67 amid rainy conditions, good for an early No. 1 national standing.

McDonald, a senior from Orange, ran a 10:43.60 at Westmont, moving to No. 3 in school history.

McDonald, who now trails only Diana George (10:15.93 in 2014) and Leanne Fogg (10:17.24 in 2011) all-time at Cal Poly, ranks No. 2 in the country early on.

The Mustangs will return with the 36th annual Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational on March 23-24. March 24 (at 1:40 p.m.) will also see Cal Poly dedicate its newly renovated track & field complex as the Steve Miller Track within the overall Steve Miller & John Capriotti Athletics Facility.
