Cal Poly Track & Field Set to Start 2018 Season at Cal Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Led by four 2017 all-conference honorees and featuring entries of nine Mustangs ranking in the Top 10 in school history, the Cal Poly track & field program will start the 2018 outdoor season on Saturday at the Cal Opener in Berkeley.

Events at Edwards Stadium begin with the hammer throw at 9 a.m. March 3 and go through 4:30 p.m., culminating with the 4x400-meter relays. For a full schedule, click here.

A trio of Cal Poly student-athletes who advanced to the West Preliminary Round of the NCAA Championships last spring are entered this weekend in the Bay Area: senior distance runner Swarnjit Boyal (the reigning Big West 10,000m champion; with a PR of 29:25.07), junior triple-jumper Kalesi Budei (40 feet, 9 inches) and junior discus-thrower Allison Scranton (167' 6"). Boyal also was an NCAA semifinals qualifier in the 5,000m as a junior, with a season-best of 14:01.48.

Another defending Big West champion, senior Mikey Giguere (14:19.18 for the 5,000m) is also set to compete, as is fellow 2017 all-conference selection Brad Beekman, a senior in the pole vault (16 feet, 3.5 inches).

Also scheduled for Cal Poly are five more teammates who also rank among the Top 10 in program history: sophomore triple-jumper Abi Iriafen (40' 4"), senior sprinter Daijah Joe-Smith (11.72-second 100-meter dash), senior 100m hurdles specialist Ciara Levy (14.10), senior decathlete Jacob Rickman (6,655 points) and senior high-jumper Danielle Taylor (5' 9.25").

Additionally leading the men's team, senior Peter Cotsirilos (3:49.30 in the 1,500m), senior 400m specialist Liam Martinez (48.21), 800m junior Connor Crowe (1:52.60) and 4x100m relay members Chineme Allison and Marcus Beloney (41.46) are also returning scorers from last year's conference championships scheduled at the season-opening meet.

Representing the women's squad, distance senior Maddie McDonald (11:02.90 for the 3,000m steeplechase & 17:35.17 in the 5,000m), junior 800m specialist Natalie Grohmann (2:11.03), sophomore heptathlete Caice Lanovaz (4,763 points) and 4x100m relay scorers Ralaina LiDrazzah, Jazmin Moreno and Ann Caroline Kaseberg (46.85) also tallied points at the 2017 Big West Championships and are traveling to Cal.

A talented class of 19 freshmen are also slated to make their collegiate debuts Saturday.

UC Davis is also sending a fully scored squad to Berkeley.

More Mustangs will make their returns to the track as the early season progresses, continuing with the UC Santa Barbara Tri-Meet held at Westmont on March 10, leading up to the 36th annual Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational on March 23-24.
