NCAA Championship Prelims Continue with Throws for Cal Poly on Day 2

AUSTIN, Texas — Cal Poly's Allison Scranton and Arnie Sambel competed in throws at the NCAA Track & Field Championship West Preliminary Round on Friday, as the three-day meet continued in Texas' Mike Myers Stadium.

Beginning at noon Central Time, Scranton finished 41st in the Women's Discus First Round, with a mark of 156 feet, 2 inches on her second attempt.

She fouled her first before reaching 151' 7" on the third throw. Scranton, a sophomore from Petaluma, will head into her junior season next spring ranked No. 6 in school history with a career best of 167' 6" at the recent Big West Conference Championships.

The regional meet features top-48 individuals west of the Mississippi River in each event, while Kentucky simultaneously hosts the East. The top 12 finishers from both meets advance to the NCAA finals at Oregon, scheduled for June 7-10 on ESPN.

Shadae Lawrence of Kansas State earned the top bid to Eugene, at 198' 9".

Later at about 4:30 Texas time, Sambel tied for 37th in the First Round of the Men's Shot Put, fouling his three attempts. He had a season-best mark of 57' 10.25", and will graduate as the No. 5 all-time shot-putter for the Mustangs.

Colorado State's Mostafa Hassan posted the day's best, 67' 8.75", while Josh McDonald of Wisconsin took the final qualifying berth at 59' 7".

Sambel, a senior from San Mateo, has another event remaining, as he'll return for the discus at 1 p.m. CDT Saturday.

In addition to Sambel, four Mustang teammates are also scheduled for Saturday: sophomores Kalesi Budei (at 6 p.m. Texas time in the Women's Triple Jump) and Peyton Bilo (8:05 p.m.; Women's 5,000-Meter Semifinals), and juniors Swarnjit Boyal and Garrett Migliozzi (8:45 p.m.; Men's 5,000m Semifinals).
