SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track & field program will begin its outdoor season in Berkeley on Saturday, competing at the Cal Opener in Edwards Stadium. The meet will start with the hammer throw at 9 a.m. and conclude with the 4x400-meter relays a little before 4:30.

Three former Big West Conference champions are entered for Cal Poly, as redshirt sophomore Megan Mooney will compete in the javelin (with a PR of 153 feet, 2 inches); redshirt junior Molly Haar (the 2015 champion for the 5,000 meters) will run in the 3,000m (with a career-best time of 9:46.84 — 9:42.80 in the recent indoor season); and sophomore Peyton Bilo (last spring's 10,000m champion) will race in the 1,500 (4:23.30) and 3,000 meters (9:38.98 in 2016 — 9:20.46 indoors a month ago).

Four teammates who also advanced to last year's West Preliminary Round of the NCAA Championships are entered as well: senior Arnie Sambel (with PRs of 57' 2" for the shot put and 175' 0" in the discus), junior high jumper Danielle Taylor (5' 9.25"), and seniors Swarnjit Boyal (3:53.77; 8:20.14) and Clayton Hutchins (3:49.37) in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters after they qualified for the 5,000m regional at Kansas in 2016.

Three more previous all-conference honorees are also scheduled at the meet: senior Ben Hartinger in the 110m hurdles (14.43 seconds), junior 10,000-meter plaque recipient Mikey Giguere in the 3,000m (8:16.92), and the reigning steeplechase runner-up, senior David Galvez, in the 1,500m (3:55.02) and 3,000m (8:37.82).

Additional returning student-athletes who scored at the 2016 conference finals scheduled to compete include seniors Allie Sulaitis (2:10.84 in the 800m), Nate Vickers (55' 1" in the shot put; 164' 3" for the discus) and heptathlete Jessica Rasmussen (19' 2.75" in the long jump), along with sophomores Hannah Hull (4:37.86 in the 1,500m), Aidan Kirwan (53.07 in the 400m hurdles) and Vince Porter (6' 9.5" in the high jump).

Among the nearly 65 Mustangs altogether making the trip to the Bay Area, several veteran teammates who've also previously qualified for the conference championships are entered in multiple events. They'll be joined by 15 true freshmen making their outdoor NCAA debuts Saturday.

The squad will continue to return to the track as the early stretch of the season progresses with the Ben Brown Invite at Cal State Fullerton from March 10-11.

The Mustangs will then return home for the 35th annual two-day Cal Poly #ShareSLO Invitational (with the hammer and discus held at nearby Cuesta College on Friday, March 24, and all other events hosted at Cal Poly on Saturday, March 25).
