Mitchell, Speak Earn Splash Café Swimmers of the Month Awards

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Fueled by their performances against the nation's finest talent during the AT&T Winter National Championships, freshman Archie Mitchell and sophomore Sage Speak were named the Splash Café Cal Poly Swimmers of the Month for December.

During the three-day championship at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., Speak delivered a pair of U.S. Olympic Trial qualifications on consecutive days. Speak raced to a mark of 1:11.48 in the 100-meter breaststroke on Dec. 4 and 2:33.51 in the 200-meter breast on Dec. 5. Speak's 200 breast time was good for 16th-place overall, which also secured the best overall time in her heat.

Speak joins Jimmy Deiparine as the most recent Cal Poly swimmers to earn an Olympic Trial qualification among the world's most heralded talent.

Speak also earned Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student Athlete of the Week honors during the week of Dec. 7.

Mitchell earned a fourth-place finish in the B Final of the Championships after his 200-meter backstroke time of 2:03.78. His Saturday finals time was 11 tenths-of-a-second quicker than his Finals-qualifying mark earlier in the day.

Both Speak and Mitchell were named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimmers of the week on Dec. 9.

During the Cal Poly women's side's dual match defeat against San Diego State on Dec. 18, Speak captured the 200-yard breaststroke after a time of 2:17.89 which was a full four seconds faster than the next closest competitor.

This season, both Speak and Mitchell have etched their names on the program's all-time individual event Top 5 lists, including Speak in the 100 breast (1:03.49) and Mitchell in both the 100 (50.55) and 200 backstroke (1:47.61).

Cal Poly returns to action at 11 a.m. PT Saturday, Jan. 9, when visiting Pacific for a dual meet at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton.
