Cal Poly Hosts San Diego State in Friday Dual Meet

COMPLETE MPSF WEEKLY NOTES (Dec. 9)

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's swimming and diving program hosts its third dual meet of the season when welcoming San Diego State to Anderson Aquatic Center at 10 a.m. PT Friday.

Cal Poly sophomore Sage Speak collected a pair of Olympic Trial qualifications in both the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke during last week's AT&T Winter National Championships.

The Mustangs return to a short-course format this week against the Aztecs (Cal Poly competed in long course format last week which was measured in meters).

San Diego State is 4-1 in dual meets this season, collecting wins over Oregon State, Vanderbilt and Washington State.

Already this season, Speak has recorded two of the best event finishes in program history in the 100-yard breast (currently No. 2 with her mark of 1:043.49 on Nov. 21) and 200-yard breast (No. 3 with a time of 2:16.77 on Nov. 22). Last week, Speak was named the Mountain Sports Pacific Federation Female Athlete of the Week after her performances at the Winter Championships.

Cal Poly sophomore Bonnie Diamond holds the MPSF top 1,650-yard freestyle mark this season – 16:50.62 at the A3 Performance Invitational on Nov. 21 – and also has the sixth-best 1,000 free time (10:26.45) among all MSPF competitors. Diamond recently earned Splash Cafe Female Swimmer of the Month for November.

Mustang freshman Meghan Merlihan has obtained two Top-10 MPSF finishes so far this season, which includes a 1,000 free mark of 10:21.61 on Oct. 31 (good for No. 4 overall) and 500 free time of 4:56.41 on Nov. 19 (good for No. 7).

Sophomore Shaelin Morefield (pictured above) owns the sixth best 200-yard butterfly mark among all MPSF competitors this season (2:03.33 on Nov. 21), while also securing the ninth-fastest 400-yard individual medley time of 4:28.40 on Nov. 20.

Senior Belen Enguidanos delivered a 200 fly mark of 2:02.07 during the third and final day of the A3 Performance Invite, which currently ranks as the fourth-best event finish in the MPSF this season.

Complete results will be available after the conclusion of Friday's dual meet with the Aztecs. Both the Cal Poly men's and women's swim teams take the rest of the 2015 calendar year off and return to action for a Jan. 9 dual meet at Pacific.
