COMPLETE CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY RESULTS
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Cal Poly swimming program saved its best for last on Saturday as sophomores Sage Speak and Zach Cootes and freshman Archie Mitchell all recorded Top 25 times during the preliminary round of their respective events on the third and final day of the 2015 AT&T Winter National Championships at Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center.
For the second consecutive day, Speak earned an Olympic Trials qualification – this time in the 200-meter breaststroke (with a mark of 2:33.51) – while Mitchell in the 200-meter backstroke (2:03.89) and Cootes in the 200-meter butterfly (2:03.60) also delivered memorable marks against the nation's finest talent.
All races during the three-day event were contested via long course format. All three Cal Poly athletes qualified for Saturday night's championship finals.
Speak (who qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials yesterday in the 100-meter breastroke) finished 16th-overall in the 200 breast on Saturday morning while capturing the best overall mark in her heat.
During Saturday evening's championship final, Speak earned an eighth-place finish in the B Final with a mark of 2:34.39.
Mitchell delivered a 12th-place finish in the 200 back during the preliminary round, while teammate Cootes cemented a 23rd-place showing in the 200 fly during Saturday morning's prelims.
During Saturday's Championship B Final, Mitchell completed a fourth-place showing in the 200 back with a mark of 2:03.78 (11 tenths-of-a-second better than his championship final-qualifying time earlier in the day).
Cootes (pictured above at right) recorded an eighth-place finish in the C Final of the 200 fly championship on Saturday with a mark of 2:04.02. Michael Phelps captured the best overall finish in the championship event with a time of 1:56.11.
Also amidst Saturday's championship finals, Pold wrapped up a 34th-place finish in the 1,500 free with a mark of 16:14.16, while Cunniff finished right behind Pold in the same event with a championship final time of 16:18.56.
