SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif – Senior Taylor Guy and sophomore Zach Cootes have been named the women's and men's Splash Café/Cal Poly Swimmers of the Month after their recent performances to open the swimming season. The award – the first of its kind at Cal Poly – distinguishes both a male and female student-athlete from the swimming program for their overall success during every month.
Guy (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) earned the annual Queen of the Pool title for her five-event aggregate score of 5:04.68 on Sept. 25, which was the lowest among all Mustang competitors. Her time was good for 13th overall, which included athletes from both Cal's swimming program and Cal Poly.
Guy placed 10th overall in the 100 fly (57.71), 13th in the 100 IM (1:00.79) and bested her five-category time from a year ago by 4.27.
During the two-day Cal Poly Invitational from Sept. 26-27, Guy finished fourth overall in the 50 free with a time of 25.05, third in the 50 fly (27.42) and second in the 100 fly (58.76). The senior also combined with Alisha Bender, Sophia Kuvan and Daniella Orlandi for the fastest 200-yard freestyle relay time of 1:39.97. Guy also helped produce the best 400-yard medley relay time of 4:02.03 along with Annalisa Parker, Katie Tsui and Kuvan.
Cootes – who owns three program Top 5 times from his freshman season a year ago – captured the best 100 fly time of 50.89 at the Cal Poly Invitational and also finished with the second-quickest 50 fly mark of 23.27. The sophomore also raced to the second-fastest 200-yard IM time during the event (1:55.15), and partnered with Dominic Dalpiaz, Dominik Folkner and Blake Faris for the quickest 200-yard free relay with a mark of 1:26.49.
Cootes also collected a top time along with Mickey Mackle, Brandon Nguyen and Caleb Davies during the 200-yard medley relay with a mark of 1:35.89.
