2014-15 -- For the second year in a row, was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships, this time by clocking a 1:48.81 in the 200-yard individual medley at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 19 in Monterey Park ... a day later at the conference finals meet, swam a career-best 3:54.53 (third-fastest in school history) in the 400 IM, good for sixth place ... also at East L.A. College Stadium, contributed to the program record-breaking 200 medley relay squad (which finished in 1:28.59) ... other wins during his junior season came in the 200 IM (at 1:54.21 vs. USC on Oct. 17 and 1:53.03 against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 31), 200 breast (2:06.19 vs. Wyoming on Nov. 15 and 2:04.69 vs. UC Santa Cruz on Jan. 17) and 50 free (21.56 against the Banana Slugs) ... began the year by claiming his third consecutive Mustang King of the Pool crown at the pentathlon with Cal on Sept. 19, when he put together an aggregate of 4:25.51, ahead of 14 Golden Bears.
2013-14 -- Closed sophomore season by satisfying the NCAA Championships' provisional cutoff for the 200 IM while racing to a time of 1:48.56 at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Federal Way, Wash. on March 6 ... also at the Pac-12 meet, helped the Mustang 800 freestyle relay team set the school record at 6:36.84 ... won the 200 IM at the tri meet against Hawai'i and UCSB on Oct. 25, at 1:53.26 ... also claimed the 400 IM at the Arena Invitational on Nov. 22, in 3:55.85 ... another win came in the 100 fly at the Mustang Invitational on Nov. 8, at 52.40.
2012-13 -- Finished freshman season by coming in 15th place to score two points in the 200-yard breaststroke at the Pac-12 Championships, with a time of 2:02.62 (four-hundredths off his season-best pace) … was also 19th in the 400 IM at the Pac-12 finals (3:54.83), and was 22nd in the 200 IM (1:49.57, eight-hundredths off his season-best time) … other season-best times included 1:41.22 in the 200 free, 52.55 in the 100 back, 1:52.21 in the 200 back, 1:52.28 in the 200 fly and 52.65 in the 100 fly … opened the year showcasing his versatility by winning team King of the Pool honors at the annual exhibition pentathlon.
Prep -- Qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 400-meter IM, with a seed time of 4:28.84 (No. 77 on the psych sheet; Ryan Lochte was No. 1) … as a senior at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, won repeat titles at the San Diego Section Division 1 Championships, claiming the 200-yard IM in 1:53.52 and the 100 back at 51.87 seconds, and also swam a leg for the championship 400 free relay squad (3:13.93) … also during senior year, was named an athlete of the week by the San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Diego Hall of Champions after winning the 200 IM and 100 fly (52.00) at the Sundevil Invitational at Mt. Carmel High School … as a junior, earned NISCA/Speedo All-America honors in two events: the 200 IM (in 1:50.56, ranking 30th nationally) and the 100 back (50.59, ranking No. 63) … was also named to the Union-Tribune all-academic first team … also visited Notre Dame and UC Santa Barbara; chose Cal Poly because he "loved the school and the swim program."
Personal -- Born Michael Mackle on May 6, 1994 in Encinitas … parents are Rob and Patty Mackle … father swam at Indiana for legendary coach James "Doc" Counsilman from 1983-86, and as a senior, was on the Hoosiers' last Big Ten Conference championship-winning 800 freestyle relay team for more than 20 years … mother swam for Hawai'i from 1986-87, and held top-10 times in program history in both the 1,000 and 1,650 frees more than 25 years later … has a brother, Duke, and a sister, Katlin … majors in mechanical engineering.
