LOS ANGELES – The Cal Poly softball program led Ole Miss after the first inning of Friday's opener at the UCLA-hosted Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, but the Rebels scored four times without reply to edge the Mustangs at Easton Stadium, 5-2.
Game No. 2 of Cal Poly's scheduled doubleheader versus second-ranked UCLA was cancelled due to rain in Southern California. The matchup will not be made up.
Weather permitting, Cal Poly (2-3) will continue Winsberg Memorial Tournament action on Saturday, Feb. 16 versus Oregon State (9 a.m.) and Fresno State (11:30 a.m.).
During Friday's tournament opener against Ole Miss (5-1), the Rebels grabbed the game's opening lead in the top of the first inning through a one-out, run-scoring single from left fielder Abbey Latham.
Cal Poly, however, reversed the early deficit during the bottom half of the first. After Rebels starting righthander Ava Tillmann retired the first two Mustangs, Cal Poly junior first baseman Hailey Martin followed senior catcher Makenna Young's base hit with a double. Senior right fielder Crimson Kaiser (above) then moved Young and Martin out of scoring position with a single up the middle.
The Rebels then swung the lead back at the first opportunity with shortstop Ally Mena and left fielder Kylan Becker producing run-scoring hits to hand Ole Miss a 3-2 advantage.
Three different Mustang pitchers kept Ole Miss scoreless between the third and sixth innings, but Cal Poly produced just two hits itself after the two-run first. Ole Miss cemented the final scoreline with two runs in the top half of the seventh.
