Cal Poly Closes USD Tournament with Sunday Doubleheader Sweep

SAN DIEGO – Freshman lefthander Krystyna Allman and sophomore righthander Dakota Casper combined on a five-hitter and the Cal Poly softball program produced six doubles as the Mustangs opened a Sunday doubleheader at the USD Tournament with a 7-3 victory against Portland State. Cal Poly completed the Sunday sweep with another 7-3 win in the nightcap versus host San Diego as senior catcher Makenna Young (above) led the way with three RBI.

During Sunday's opening victory versus Portland State (2-4), Cal Poly (2-2) placed the game out of reach with a five-run second inning. Senior right fielder Crimson Kaiser led off the inning with a single before senior left fielder Sydney James reached on a fielding error by Vikings second baseman Riley Casper. Freshman shortstop Maddie Amos then delivered a single to left center to plate Kaiser before junior second baseman Alyssa McKiernan cleared the bases with a double to hand Cal Poly a 3-0 lead. Sophomore center fielder Noellah Ramos then drew a full-count walk ahead of senior catcher Makenna Young, who added a two-run single to push Cal Poly's lead to 5-0.

The Mustangs then went up 7-0 in the top of the fifth after junior first baseman Hailey Martin singled up the middle to score senior third baseman Noa Yakir. The Mustangs later loaded the bases against Portland State reliever Alyssa Burk before Amos drew a walk to force home Martin.

Making her first collegiate start, Allman (1-0) limited Portland State to two hits and faced just three Vikings over the minimum on 34 pitches before giving way to Casper to begin the fifth. Casper retired Portland State in order during the fifth before two Cal Poly errors led to three Vikings runs in the sixth. Casper then stranded a Portland State baserunner to close the seventh and preserve Cal Poly's victory.

During Sunday's second victory against San Diego (1-4), Cal Poly slipped behind the Toreros in the bottom of the first inning after right fielder Lindsay Clare singled home center fielder Taylor Spence with two down.

Held to just one hit during the first two innings, Cal Poly wrested the lead from San Diego with a five-run, third. Young opened Cal Poly's scoring with a two-run double that brought home Yakir and McKiernan before being brought home herself through a Martin double. Freshman designated player Lily Amos and James each added RBI singles later in the inning to hand Cal Poly a 5-1 lead.

San Diego trimmed Cal Poly's lead to 5-3 with two runs in the bottom half of the third off of junior righthander Steffi Best.

The Mustangs, however, returned in the top of the fourth to double their lead as Young picked up her third RBI of the game with a single that brought home Yakir.

Cal Poly completed the scoring in the sixth as Martin plated Ramos with a single into center field.

Junior righthander Shelby Jeffries (1-0) earned the victory for Cal Poly after allowing just two hits in one and two-third innings after taking over for Best. Allman then tossed two and one-third innings without allowing a hit to close the matchup.

Cal Poly resumes action at the Feb. 15-17, UCLA-hosted Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. Cal Poly's portion of the tournament begins on Friday, Feb. 15 versus Ole Miss (11:30 a.m.) and No. 2 UCLA (4:30 p.m.).
