NORTHRIDGE – Senior righthander Lindsey Chalmers threw a complete-game, six-hitter and senior shortstop Chelsea Convissar (top) swatted her second home run of 2018 as the Cal Poly softball program completed its three-game stretch at the CSUN-hosted Matador Classic and its 29-game non-conference schedule with a 4-1 victory versus Santa Clara at Matador Diamond.
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Cal Poly (16-13) – which furthered its winning streak versus Santa Clara to 12 straight victories – grabbed the lead for certain in the top of the second. After sophomore designated player Shelby Jeffries reached with one down on a fielding error from Broncos shortstop Eleni Spirakis, junior catcher Noa Yakir placed two Mustangs in scoring position with a double to right center field. Senior second baseman Alejandra Garcia followed with a run-scoring base hit before senior center fielder Amanda Sandoval placed Cal Poly in front with a sacrifice fly.
Handed the lead, Chalmers (11-4) retired Santa Clara order to close the second before leaving the bags loaded to end the third after Garcia made an over-the-shoulder catch for out No. 3.
Chalmers then retired seven straight beginning in the fourth before hitting Spirakis with one down in the sixth. The Broncos eventually loaded the bases in the sixth, but a Mustang double play left the Santa Clara bags loaded a second time.
Meanwhile, Convissar's solo homer with two down in the fifth ran Cal Poly's lead to 3-1 before Yakir completed the scoring during the sixth, plating freshman pinch runner Sarah Wulff with a sacrifice fly.
Cal Poly opens its 22nd season of Big West Conference action with a March 30-31 home series against UC Riverside. The three-game set begins on Friday, March 30 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field.
