SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior righthander Lindsey Chalmers threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and sophomore designated player Shelby Jeffries hit her first collegiate home run on Friday afternoon (above) as the Cal Poly softball program opened its own ShareSLO Mustang Classic tournament with a 3-0 victory versus North Dakota. The Mustangs then completed the doubleheader sweep with a 2-1, second-game victory versus Marist at Bob Janssen Field.
During Friday's opening victory versus North Dakota (12-10), Cal Poly (10-9) notched the only run Chalmers required without a hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Stephanie Heyward bunted to lead off and North Dakota starting righthander Hannah Bergh (6-5) fielded the attempt before throwing wide of Fighting Hawks first baseman Ashlynn Uvila. Junior right fielder Crimson Kaiser followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Heyward to third before sophomore first baseman Hailey Martin brought home the game's opening run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The next batter, Jeffries, then swatted her first career home run to left center to double Cal Poly's lead.
Handed the lead, Chalmers (7-3) conceded North Dakota's first hit during the top of the fifth before striking out the Fighting Hawks side. Failing to walk a batter, Chalmers threw 76 percent of her 94 pitches for strikes.
Jeffries capped Cal Poly's scoring in the bottom of the sixth, singling to right field with two down to plate freshman pinch hitter Sarah Wulff for the 3-0 edge.
During Friday's second win against Marist (5-7), the Red Foxes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after first baseman Lauren Beal produced a two-out, run-scoring single to plate shortstop Caroline Baratta.
Cal Poly, however, countered in the bottom of the first with the eventual winning runs. After Heyward tripled to right center with two down, Kaiser tied the matchup with a run-scoring single to left field. Martin followed with a double to right center that brought home Kaiser for the 2-1 lead.
Best returned in the circle to retire Marist in order during the second. She stranded two runners in the third before setting down the Red Foxes in order during the fourth.
Jeffries took over in the circle for Best to begin the fifth and earned her first career save by striking out four without allowing a hit or walk.
