SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Big West Conference's all-time strikeout leader and a 2017 NFCA All-America second team selection, former Cal Poly softball righthander Sierra Hyland agreed to a one-year deal on Thursday to remain with National Pro Fastpitch franchise Chicago Bandits for the 2018 season.
Hyland, selected fourth overall in April's NPF Draft, finished her first professional season 1-2 in the circle and with a 3.57 ERA. She compiled 15 and two-third innings for the season after making her debut against the Texas Charge on June 16. Hyland secured her first career victory in a 5-4 win over the Beijing Shougang Eagles on Aug. 1 after allowing one run in three innings.
A two-time Big West Pitcher of the Year selection (2014, 2017) and the only four-time NFCA All-Region honoree in program history, Hyland closed her senior season ranked third among NCAA Division I pitchers in shutouts (12), fifth in ERA (1.10), 10th in strikeouts (275), 20th in hits allowed per seven innings (4.38), 22nd in victories (24) and 51st in strikeouts per seven innings (7.3).
During 2017, Hyland also became Cal Poly's all-time leader for shutouts (38), complete games (104) and starts (122) and, with a 1.56 career ERA, ranks second in program history.
As a team, Chicago Bandits finished the 2017 season with a 22-28 record and in fifth place in the NPF standings.
