Cal Poly Softball Falls Twice on Saturday at Mustang Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior center fielder Whitley Gerhart belted her first collegiate home run during Saturday's opening game at the Mustang Classic and sophomore shortstop Kim Westlund added two RBI during the nightcap, but the Cal Poly softball program dropped both ends of a split doubleheader against, respectively, Ball State (9-4) and Lipscomb (12-3).

The complete results from all Mustang Classic games are below. Weather permitting on the central coast, Cal Poly will complete Mustang Classic action on Sunday, March 25 at 11 a.m. against UNLV. That game will be preceded by a 9 a.m. matchup between Lipscomb and Ball State.

During Cal Poly's Saturday opener against Ball State (19-8), the Cardinals struck the opening blow with three runs during the top of the first as left fielder Jennifer Gilbert homered to open the game before third baseman Audrey Bickel produced a two-run double.

The Mustangs (7-17) answered with a run during the bottom half of the inning as Westlund produced a sacrifice fly to plate senior left fielder Nora Sobczak.

Ball State, however, returned with a four-run second inning that included run-scoring hits from Gilbert and designated player Amanda Montalto. The Cardinals eventually increased their lead to 9-1 with single scores during the third and fourth innings.

Gerhart, with just three collegiate extra-base hits to her name entering play Saturday, earned a run back for Cal Poly during the bottom half of the fifth with a full-count solo homer to left field.

Cal Poly added two additional runs during the sixth to finalize the scoring with Cochiolo lacing a two-run double to left center field that plated freshman designated player Emily Ceccacci and freshman third baseman Celina Lafrades.

During Saturday's closing game against Lipscomb (19-8), Cal Poly once again fell behind immediately as Bison catcher Mollie Mitchell produced a one-out RBI single during the top of the first before right fielder Caroline Mason doubled the visitor's lead with a run-scoring groundout.

Cal Poly halved Lipscomb's advantage during the bottom of the second as Cochiolo doubled to left center field with two down to bring home senior designated player Nicole Lund.

Lipscomb, however, tallied single scores during the third and fourth innings before a two-run homer from catcher Haley Elliott in the fifth furthered the Bison advantage to 6-1.

Lipscomb finalized its run total with a six-run seventh inning, highlighted by a grand slam from second baseman Kelsey Cotright.

Trailing 12-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs mounted a late rally as Westlund singled with two outs to score Sobczak and Gerhart.

Freshman lefthander Chloe Wurst (2-8), who struck out three Lipscomb hitters, suffered both Saturday losses for Cal Poly.
