Ortlip Earns Second Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week Award of Season

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After extending his singles winning streak and helping keep the Cal Poly men's tennis team in first place in the Big West, senior Josh Ortlip was named this week's Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week.

Ortlip won his fifth and sixth straight singles matches last weekend against UC Riverside and Santa Clara. He improved his singles record to a team-best 13-5 on the year in dual matches.

The Mustangs (12-8, 3-0 BWC) took down the Highlanders before falling to the Broncos. At 3-0, Cal Poly currently sits in first place in the conference heading into the final two matches of the regular season.

Ortlip took down UC Riverside's Kyle McCann, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to help Cal Poly to the 4-2 team victory. He also was victorious against Santa Clara's Andrew Gu, 6-3, 6-0, in a narrow 4-3 loss for the Mustangs.

Ortlip and his doubles partner, senior Dominic Bechard downed UCR's Vignesh Subramanyan and Anderson Ju by a 6-1 score at No. 1 doubles to help secure the doubles point.

This is Ortlip's fifth career Athlete of the Week honor, tying him for sixth all-time in the conference record book.

Cal Poly hosts Hawai'i Friday at noon from Mustang Tennis Complex for senior day. The Mustangs then go on the road to face second place UC Santa Barbara Saturday at 10 a.m.
