DAVIS, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis program improved to 2-0 in the Big West after a 4-0 road win over UC Davis Saturday, its most dominating win of the season.
The Mustangs (10-7, 2-0 BWC) took the doubles point over the Aggies (10-8, 0-2 BWC) after wins on courts one and two. The No. 1 pairing of seniors Josh Ortlip and Dominic Bechard got things started with a 6-2 win. The No. 2 pairing of sophomore Gary Vardanyan and junior Antoine Noel then clinched the point with a 6-2 win. With the wins, Vardanyan and Noel improved their record to a team-best 7-2 while Bechard and Ortlip improved to 4-4.
The Mustangs kept their strong play going once it moved to singles. Ortlip made it an undefeated day after he quickly put Cal Poly up 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. He is now 10-5 on the season and has won his last three matches.
Redshirt freshman Daly Meinert won his second match of the season after a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 position to put the Mustangs up 3-0. Freshman Gary Vardanyan then clinched the 4-0 victory after a 7-6, 7-5 win at the No. 4 spot. With the win, Vardanyan is now 10-4 in singles this season.
Cal Poly remains in northern California Sunday to take on non-conference opponent University of Pacific at noon.
