FULLERTON – Senior goalkeeper Simon Boehme (above) finished with five saves Wednesday evening, but goals from Cal State Fullerton six minutes into action and three minutes after the second-half restart marked the difference at Titan Stadium as the Mustangs dropped a 2-0 decision.
With the loss, Cal Poly (4-6-2, 0-2-1) stayed on one point in the Big West Conference standings alongside fellow seventh-place side UC Davis (7-3-3, 0-2-1). Cal State Fullerton (5-3-6, 1-1-1), meanwhile, improved to four points and moved into fourth place alongside CSUN (7-5-1, 1-1-1). The top six programs qualify for the Oct. 31, Nov. 3 and 10 Big West Tournament.
Cal Poly concludes a two-match road trip when visiting CSUN on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
Cal State Fullerton surged into a 1-0 lead with Wednesday's first attacking sequence. After forward Samuel Goni struck the left post with a sixth-minute attempt, Boehme saved the rebounded effort from forward Christian Pinzon. The ball, however, fell back to Goni, who fired diagonally into the top right corner of the Cal Poly net.
Boehme was called upon to make a second save nine minutes later before making a one-on-one stop versus midfielder Oscar Flores in the 30th.
Offensively, Cal Poly forced Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Paul-Andre Guerin into two first-half saves with senior midfielder Jose Rivera stopped in the 10th before freshman defender Brecc Evans saw his 21st-minute header collected.
Into the second half, Mustang sophomore defender Addison Parrish's 48th-minute attempt was blocked by Guerin from eight yards away. Just 54 seconds later, however, Titans defender Zico Bailey doubled Cal State Fullerton's lead after driving a shot that Boehme got a right glove to but which ultimately landed in the top left corner of the Mustang net.
Cal Poly produced two additional scoring opportunities the remainder of the evening, but freshman forward Reagan Rice fired wide in the 67th and 73rd minutes.
Senior forward Sean Goode also finished with a team leading two shot attempts for Cal Poly.
