Cal Poly Falls in Overtime to Sacramento State, 3-2

SAN LUIS OBISPO – First-half goals from senior defender Adam Olsen and junior forward Sean Goode (above) provided the Cal Poly men's soccer program a brief lead Wednesday evening versus Sacramento State, but the Hornets found the equalizer in the 69th minute and the match winner in the 105th as the Mustangs dropped a 3-2, overtime decision inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

Junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme recorded four saves for Cal Poly (5-8-0, 1-4-0), which went behind 1-0 in the seventh minute following Wednesday's opening goal by Hornet midfielder Christian Webb.

Held to three shots during the opening 40 minutes, however, Cal Poly equalized as a blocked shot by Mustang freshman defender Freeman Dwamena was handled inside the penalty area by a Hornet defender. Olsen stepped to the penalty spot and converted his team-leading third goal at the left post.

Cal Poly, playing its 100th all-time match at Spanos Stadium, then surged ahead in the 44th as freshman defender Luis Rodriguez laid a pass off for Goode inside the penalty area. Goode turned his defender and matched Olsen for Cal Poly's scoring lead on three goals by firing into the right corner of the Hornet net.

Into the second half, Sacramento State itself equalized in the 69th. With the Hornets having won a free kick on the top left edge of the Cal Poly penalty area, defender Cylus Sandoval lined the game-tying goal past Boehme at the left post.

Cal Poly, playing just its second overtime game of 2017, then conceded the match winner five minutes from a potential draw as Hornet Matt Carnefix found fellow midfielder Dominic Scotti for the goal.

With Wednesday's defeat, Cal Poly remained bottom of the Big West Conference North Division standings on three points. Sacramento State (7-5-1, 3-1-1), meanwhile, improved to 10 points and now shares the top with UC Santa Barbara (5-5-3, 3-1-1) and UC Davis (6-6-2, 3-1-1).

Cal Poly visits UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 14 in the opening leg of the Blue-Green rivalry. Kickoff at Harder Stadium is 7 p.m. with action television on Fox Prime Ticket.
