SAN LUIS OBISPO – A 25th-minute penalty from Cal State Fullerton midfielder Diego Sanchez stood as the difference Saturday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program – despite producing 11 second-half shots and placing four attempts on target in the final 16 minutes – couldn't produce an equalizer and saw a five-match winning streak snapped inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior forward Sean Goode (above) placed all three of his shot attempts on target for Cal Poly, which had matched a program record with its five straight victories entering play Saturday. Cal Poly outshot the Titans 14-5 – including an 11-1 advantage in the second half – and produced seven corner kick opportunities to Cal State Fullerton's two.
Junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme added two saves for Cal Poly, which also played with a man advantage for the final 54 minutes after Cal State Fullerton defender Michael Lopez saw his second yellow card in a three-and-a-half minute span.
In defeat, Cal Poly (5-5-0, 1-1-0) remained on three points in the Big West Conference North Division standings and slipped to fourth place before UC Santa Barbara (4-4-2, 2-0-0; six points), Sacramento State (5-4-1, 1-0-1; four points) and UC Davis (4-5-2, 1-0-1; four points).
Cal Poly hits the road for the first time in Big West play when visiting UC Irvine (Thursday, Oct. 5) and CSUN (Saturday, Oct. 7).
Held without a shot attempt for the opening 35 minutes, Cal Poly found itself trailing 1-0 in the 25th after a foul inside the penalty area. Sanchez stepped to the spot and converted the only goal of the match near the right post.
Into the second half, Cal Poly produced four shot attempts inside the opening 17 minutes before junior forward Jared Pressley dragged a shot across the Cal State Fullerton goalmouth in the 69th.
Cal Poly's first shots on goal came consecutively in the 74th minute as Goode was first turned away by Titans goalkeepers Paul-Andre Guerin before a second attempt was knocked off the line by a sliding effort from defender Sam Molz.
Two minutes later, senior forward Kaba Alkebulan's header was caught by Guerin and Goode was thwarted once more in the 80th.
