Cal Poly Wraps Four-Match Road Trip with 2-0 Loss at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Junior goalkeeper Eric Kam (top) matched a career high with four saves Sunday evening, but New Mexico made a 25th-minute goal from defender Aaron Herrera stand as part of a 2-0 decision as the Mustangs wrapped a four-match road trip and the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Invitational with their third one-goal loss in eight days.

Mustang freshman forward Kenneth Higgins led all players with three shot attempts and Cal Poly (0-4-0) matched New Mexico (2-2-0) with 10 total shots. Cal Poly, however, placed just two attempts on target.

Neither side produced a shot attempt until Mustang freshman midfielder Christian Enriquez fired high 12 minutes into play.

Sunday's match still hadn't witnessed a shot on target until New Mexico notched the opening goal on 25 minutes. With Cal Poly's defense failing to clear a ball played through the penalty area, Lobos forward Niko Hansen found Herrera, who backheeled his goal inside the left post.

Cal Poly, meanwhile, was kept to just one shot on goal during the opening half with a looping attempt from Higgins caught by New Mexico goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu.

The Mustangs produced two shot attempts inside the opening three minutes of the second half while Kam pawed away a Herrera attempt in the 49th to keep Cal Poly's deficit at one goal.

Kam then dived to save attempts from midfielder Devin Boyce in the 61st and Hansen less than a minute later to keep the Mustangs in contention. Eleven minutes from full time Kam chalked up his fourth save, dropping to his left to parry away a Hansen attempt.

Cal Poly's best opportunity to find an equalizer occurred in the 72nd minute, but Enriquez whistled a free kick over the cross bar from 30 yards. Senior midfielder Ruben Duran also fired over the crossbar in the 80th.

New Mexico doubled its lead three minutes from full time as midfielder Chris Wehan raced toward goal and fired past Kam into the bottom right corner.

Cal Poly begins its eight-match home schedule when hosting Fresno Pacific at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.
