IRVINE – Senior defender Kip Colvey's first goal in two seasons and just four minutes into action provided the Cal Poly men's soccer team a lead for the majority of Saturday's matchup at UC Irvine, but Anteaters midfielder Eduardo Calzada scored with four minutes remaining in regulation as the Mustangs finished in a 1-1 draw.
Senior goalkeeper Wade Hamilton chalked up two saves for Cal Poly (6-2-2, 1-0-1), which remained unbeaten after two Big West Conference games for the second successive season. Despite the draw, Cal Poly has now led its opponents during 565 of a possible 950 minutes this season.
The Mustangs, unbeaten in four successive games, produced Saturday's game-winning goal with the first shot attempt of the match as junior defender Ruben Duran played a ball through the penalty area to Colvey (above), who scored his first and only collegiate goal since Nov. 12, 2013 with a shot inside the far post.
Cal Poly was held without a shot attempt for the next 33 minutes and junior forward Justin Dhillon was turned away by Anteaters goalkeeper Michael Breslin in the 40th minute.
Hamilton, making his 58th successive start, preserved Cal Poly's lead with a 16th-minute save of UC Irvine's Mats Bjurman while Calzada struck the post two seconds prior to halftime.
In to the second half, Cal Poly tested Breslin twice with Colvey stopped on 74 minutes and sophomore forward Kaba Alkebulan turned away six minutes later.
UC Irvine, which has only lost once at home to Cal Poly in the last eight meetings and outshot the Mustangs 19-12 on Saturday, produced the equalizer with four minutes remaining as Calzada – who finished with a match high seven shot attempts – directed a pass from forward Jaime Phillips past Hamilton.
Each side produced a shot on frame during the overtime periods with Cal Poly's a 93rd-minute attempt by junior defender Jack O'Connor.
Hamilton, meanwhile, stopped Phillips three minutes from full time to preserve the draw.
Cal Poly opens a season-long, three-match home stand when hosting Cal State Fullerton at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 8. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
