MINNEAPOLIS – Cal Poly men's basketball senior guard Donovan Fields scored four points and grabbed a rebound as his Big West Conference squad closed play at the 3X3U National Championship on Saturday morning by defeating the Atlantic 10 Conference inside the Mall of America, 21-20.
The Big West Conference, however, finished with a 1-2 record in Pool C and, with a third-place showing, was eliminated from tournament contention. The top two teams in Pool C – the American Athletic Conference (3-0) and the Northeast Conference (2-1), both of which defeated the Big West during Friday's opening round of pool play – advanced to Sunday's knockout round.
Featuring players who have exhausted their collegiate eligibility, the 3X3U National Championship features four-man teams representing each of the 32 NCAA Division I conferences in a three-on-three format. Each game consists of 10 minutes and a 12-second shot clock with one point awarded for baskets inside the three-point arc and two for baskets outside the arc. First team to 21 points wins.
Aside from Fields, the Big West was represented by Long Beach State guard Deishuan Booker, UC Santa Barbara guard Ar'mond Davis and UC Irvine forward Jonathan Galloway.
