Joseph with 36 Points as Cal Poly Outlasts CSUN in Double Overtime

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior guard Victor Joseph (above) finished with a career high 36 points – 17 of which came during two overtime periods – to record the highest single-game scoring total by a Mustang in eight years as the Cal Poly men's basketball program outlasted CSUN Thursday evening inside Mott Athletics Center, 90-86.

Junior forward Aleks Abrams grabbed a career high 18 rebounds while junior guard Donovan Fields matched his collegiate high with 23 points for Cal Poly (9-19, 4-10), which trailed CSUN (6-22, 3-11) 76-72 with 10 seconds to play in the first overtime period. Joseph, however, knocked down one of his five three-pointers to cut the Matador lead to a single point. With Cal Poly fouling to regain possession and after CSUN guard Terrell Gomez sank two free throws, Joseph hit another three-pointer to force a second overtime period at 78-78.

Cal Poly, which played a triple-overtime game versus UC Davis just seven days prior, received a jumper and two free throws from Joseph to open Thursday's second overtime with an 82-78 lead. A jumper from CSUN forward Carl Brown trimmed Cal Poly's lead back to two with 86 seconds to play, but Joseph sank yet another three-pointer on the ensuing possession before icing four free throws down the stretch to preserve Cal Poly's lead and eventual win.

With the victory, seventh-placed Cal Poly moved one game clear of both CSUN and UC Riverside (8-19, 3-10) in the Big West Conference standings.

Cal Poly closes the 207-18 regular season with a pair of road matchups at UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara (20-7, 9-4). Both games tip at 7 p.m.

Joseph, who finished 11-for-17 from the floor and 9-for-9 from the free throw line, produced the Cal Poly program's highest point total since guard Lorenzo Keeler scored 38 during a 95-81 victory at UC Irvine (Jan. 4, 2010).

Abrams, who also matched a career best with three blocks, recorded the highest rebounding total by a Mustang since current forward Josh Martin pulled down 21 boards at Pepperdine on Nov. 11, 2016.

Freshman win Mark Crowe matched a career high with seven rebounds for Cal Poly.
