Cal Poly Wraps Up Non-Conference Slate With 73-40 Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Forward Josh Martin's fifth career double-double — 11 rebounds and 10 points — helped Cal Poly close out the non-conference portion of its 2017-18 men's basketball season with a 73-40 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday night inside Mott Athletics Center.

Guard Donovan Fields led the Mustangs (5-9), who snapped a five-game losing streak, with 12 points while guard Victor Joseph added 11 and Marcellus Garrick came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

Notre Dame de Namur (2-8), from Belmont, Calif., was paced by Omar Lo and Chazz Wade, each with eight points. The visiting Argonauts were held to 31 percent shooting from the floor, including just three of 20 from long range after making just one of their first 15 threes.

Cal Poly led all the way after Joseph hit a three-pointer and Fields scored a layup for a 5-0 lead three minutes into the game. The Mustangs sprinted to a 15-2 advantage in the opening five minutes and led by as many as 22 points in the first half before settling for a 41-20 cushion at the break.

Cal Poly's 33-point margin of victory was its largest lead of the game.

With the win, Cal Poly is now 38-1 against non-Division I programs since transitioning to Division I in 1994. Saturday's matchup was the first between the two schools since 2002.

Cal Poly compiled a 42-30 advantage on the boards, led by Martin's (pictured above) 11, a high for any Mustang this season. Alex Abrams' eight boards are a season high.

Joseph has scored in double figures 13 times in 14 games this season.

Cal Poly turned the ball over a season-low four times. Last time the Mustangs committed just four turnovers was against Princeton on Dec. 31, 2016.

Cal Poly made 46 percent of its floor shots.. (28 of 61), including six of 17 from three-point range.

The Mustangs open Big West Conference play next Thursday by hosting UC Santa Barbara at 7:05 p.m. Cal Poly also hosts Cal State Fullerton next Saturday night.
