Martin, Joseph Lead Mustangs to 80-67 Win in Green vs. Gold Intrasquad

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior forward Josh Martin had 24 points and 13 rebounds, and senior guard Victor Joseph added 22 points to lead the Gold team to an 80-67 win over the Green at the Cal Poly men's basketball program's annual Green vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday inside Mott Athletics Center.

Meanwhile junior guard Donovan Fields scored a game-high 30 points for the Green squad.

The game featured two 15-minute halves.

Joseph ignited an early lead for Gold, draining a jumper for the game's first points, adding a 3-pointer to make it 8-2, and sinking a layup for a 14-6 lead. A bit later on, three consecutive 3s (by Joseph, Martin and then Joseph again) provided a 29-12 lead.

Freshman guard Iziah James, who distributed four assists to go along with 11 points, scored on a fastbreak to produce the largest lead of the opening half, 40-22, en route to a 42-25 advantage at intermission.

A 3 from junior wing Eric Toles — who finished with 14 points — cut the deficit to 51-43 after the break, but Martin responded with a shot of his own from beyond the arc to regain an 11-point upper hand.

Green once more pulled within an eight-point margin, via a Fields jumper making it 54-46, but junior forward Jakub Niziol answered with another trey, part of an 11-2 run that stretched Gold's lead back to 65-48 midway through the second half.

Green brought itself within single-digits one last time on a Fields drive to the hoop (76-67) late in the game, but Joseph and Niziol combined to go 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the closing minutes while getting stops for the final score.

Niziol added 16 points and six rebounds in the win, while junior forward Aleks Abrams secured a team-best nine rebounds for Green.

The game was preceded by a free youth clinic for the community, followed by a dunk contest — won by Niziol, who edged Martin in the final after advancing from the first round.

Cal Poly will return to Mott to host Cal State East Bay in a 7 p.m. exhibition on Thursday, Nov. 2.

The Mustangs will then open the regular season in the Bay Area, at Stanford (on Friday, Nov. 10) and Cal (Sunday, Nov. 12) — each televised on the Pac-12 Network.
