SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Aleks Abrams (above) matched a game high with 13 points and led all players with 16 rebounds, but the Gold squad – after trailing for a majority of the afternoon – overcame a late deficit to top the Green side during the Cal Poly men's basketball program's annual intrasquad tuneup inside Mott Athletics Center on Saturday, 38-33.
Senior guard Kyle Toth finished with 13 points for the Gold squad, which trailed 30-26 late in the second half. However, freshman forward Hank Hollingsworth knocked down a free throw, Toth hit his third three-pointer of the day and sophomore guard Jaylen Shead sank a jumper as the Gold team eventually tied the matchup at 32-32.
Junior forward Josh Martin then added two free throws to provide Gold the lead for certain. With his side leading 36-33 in the final minute, Toth hit two free throws to ice the matchup.
Martin added a team high eight rebounds for Gold while junior guard Josh Mishler chipped in seven points.
Cal Poly, which returns nine letterwinners from last year's team, opens the 2016-17 regular season at Pepperdine on Friday, Nov. 11. Start time in Malibu is 7 p.m.
