COLLEGE HOOPS DAILY SITS DOWN WITH JOE CALLERO AND CHRIS EVERSLEY
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore Dave Nwaba (left in photo) scored a game-high 12 points in his Mustang men's basketball debut and fellow forward Zach Gordon chipped in with 11 as the Green squad cruised past the Gold team 43-25 in the Cal Poly program's annual intrasquad exhibition tuneup inside the Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Jamal Johnson recorded game highs for rebounds (five) and assists (four) for the Green team, which trailed Gold just once and only by a single point during the 20-minute contest.
Junior guard Maliik Love, who redshirted last year for Cal Poly, scored a team-leading 10 points for the Gold squad.
A Love layup inside the first minute of action provided Gold its only lead of the afternoon as Green quickly compiled a 9-2 run – capped by a three-pointer from freshman guard Ridge Shipley – to go up 10-4.
The Gold squad needed just three minutes to claw to within one point of the Green lead at 12-11. The Green team, however, scored seven unanswered points and led by no fewer than five points the remainder of the day. En route, Green utilized a 19-6 run that was capped by a Gordon spin move in the paint to extend his side's lead to 31-17.
Solidified with two three-pointers, senior guard Kyle Odister chipped in with eight points for Green.
Held after Saturday's Green and Gold exhibition, Cal Poly's inaugural dunk contest was captured by Nwaba – an offseason transfer from Santa Monica College.
Cal Poly, which won 18 games last year and set single-season program records for Big West Conference victories (12-6) and winning percentage (.667), opens its regular season at nationally-ranked Arizona on Friday, Nov. 8.
The Mustangs will host Nevada in their Tuesday, Nov. 12 home opener.
