NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Senior guard Shawn Lewis led all scorers with a season-high 24 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball team, attempting to match the best start to any Big West Conference campaign in program history, suffered an 80-65 defeat against Cal State Northridge on Saturday afternoon at the Matadome.
Junior forwards Jordan Lewis and David Hanson added nine points and a team-leading eight rebounds, respectively, but Cal Poly (8-10, 4-3) allowed its second-highest marks of the season for field goal (57.9) and three-point percentage (50.0) and yielded 51 second-half points against Cal State Northridge (6-13, 3-3) as the Mustangs dropped their first Big West road contest of the 2010-11 campaign.
During an opening 20 minutes in which neither program led by more than five points, the Mustangs and Matadors traded the lead five times before a 9-2 run by Cal State Northridge late during the first half provided the hosts a 29-24 advantage. Cal Poly, however, responded by holding Cal State Northridge scoreless for the final two-and-a-half minutes and, sparked by a pair of free throws and a three-point play from Shawn Lewis (above), took a 31-29 lead into intermission.
The Mustangs, making their second television appearance of the season on Fox Sports Net PRIME, continued the trend to open the second half, notching five of the initial six points to eventually lead 44-38 with 15 minutes remaining following a three-pointer by Jordan Lewis.
The Mustangs, however, were held to just a pair of Shawn Lewis free throws during an ensuing three-and-a-half minute span with a three-pointer by Matador freshman guard Josh Greene delivering Cal State Northridge a 49-46 lead. Three-pointers by Matador guards Vinnie McGhee and Dathan Lyle followed and Cal State Northridge eventually built a 59-51 lead following a pair of free throws from senior forward Lenny Daniel.
Cal Poly, which committed just 11 turnovers, cut Cal State Northridge's advantage to 61-56 with five minutes to play following the second of junior guard Matt Titchenal's two three-pointers, but drew no closer the remaining of the afternoon.
Shawn Lewis added a team-high four assists for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly returns home to host central coast rival UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Jan. 27 inside Mott Gym. Tip time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the matchup broadcast locally on KSBY-TV.
