Recruiting Area: Inland Empire
Former UC Davis assistant coach Wes Nurse was hired by the Cal Poly football team as an assistant coach in charge of the cornerbacks in February 2019.
“Wes brings the experiences of athletic and academic backgrounds needed to make us better,” said Walsh. “Where he has been athletically and academically will make his transition to Cal Poly pretty smooth. He has a great understanding of the academic and athletic needs we have here.
“He will be a great guy both as a mentor and role model as well as on the field,” Walsh added. “I look forward to Wes helping us move forward in all ways with our program.”
Nurse coached the Aggie cornerbacks in 2011 and again from 2015-18. In between the two coaching stints at UC Davis, Nurse coached the cornerbacks at North Dakota for two seasons (2012-13) and the running backs and tight ends at Minnesota-Crookston for one year (2014).
Nurse played collegiately at Boise State, where he was a three-year starting safety, earning All-Western Athletic Conference first-team honors and team MVP accolades in 2003. He was later a graduate assistant for the Broncos from 2005-07 under former UC Davis football players Dan Hawkins and Chris Petersen for two years. He's also coached at Houston, The Citadel and The Military College of South Carolina.
Nurse was a standout defensive back for Boise State from 1999-2003, starting for three seasons while earning a pair of All-Western Athletic Conference honors. He was a team captain, defensive MVP and helped the Broncos to four conference titles.
Nurse graduated from Boise State with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He and his wife, Valerie, are parents of three children - Jaiden, Treyvn and Caysen.
