Cal Poly Shut Out by Baylor 3-0 in Opener of Three-Game Series

WACO, Texas – Junior southpaw Paul Dickens retired the final 16 batters he faced and allowed one bunt single over seven scoreless innings as Baylor blanked Cal Poly 3-0 in the opener of a three-game non-conference baseball series Friday night inside Baylor Ballpark.

Dickens (2-1) struck out five and walked two before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Luke Boyd and Kyle Hill each tossed a scoreless frame for Baylor (12-4), Hill earning his third save. The two relievers combined to strike out five Mustangs.

Coming off a four-game series sweep against Columbia and a 17-hit offensive outburst in a suspended game at Pepperdine on Tuesday, Cal Poly was held to just two hits, was shut out for the second time and fell to 6-10 for the season.

Mustang fifth-year senior Jarred Zill (pictured above) pitched three scoreless innings before surrendering back-to-back RBI doubles to Shea Langeliers and Andy Thomas in the fourth.

Cal Poly had two runners on base in both the first and second innings, but couldn't take advantage. One of the runners was Elijah Greene, who bunted for a single in the first inning.

Cal Poly's only other hit in the game was a one-out double by Myles Emmerson down the right-field line in the eighth inning, but Boyd struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

Entering the game with a .318 team batting average, Baylor collected just three hits against Zill and relievers Michael Clark, Thomas Triantos and Dylan Villalobos. In addition to the run-scoring doubles, Davis Wendzel singled with one out in the eighth.

Zill (0-4) tossed six innings, allowing two runs and two hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Clark surrendered a run in the eighth while Triantos and Villalobos each secured one out.

Second game of the series will be played Saturday at 1:05 p.m. Pacific with Mustang junior right-hander Bobby Ay (0-0, 5.06 ERA) to face Baylor sophomore righty Jimmy Winston (1-0, 0.59 ERA).

Sunday's series finale begins at 11:05 a.m. PDT.
