Catcher Austin Kron Continues Torrid Hitting Pace During Summer Ball

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomore-to-be catcher Austin Kron has been swinging a hot bat for the Alameda Merchants this summer.

Kron (pictured at right and below) sports a .478 batting average in 19 games with three doubles and one triple, driving in 11 runs. The Palo Alto High School graduate has seven-multiple-hit games, including a 4-for-5 performance at Humboldt on July 5, and has stolen nine of 13 bases this season.

As a true freshman last spring at Cal Poly, Kron played in 17 games with seven starts, collecting four hits, including one double.

Meanwhile, another Mustang catcher, junior-to-be Brett Barbier, is hitting .317 for the San Luis Obispo Blues with five doubles, 14 RBI and six steals in seven attempts. He has produced six multi-hit games this season. Barbier was selected to play in the California Collegiate League All-Star Game on July 15 in Compton.

Sophomore-to-be outfielder Ben Polshuk is hitting .293 for the Victoria HarbourCats with three doubles, a triple, three home runs and 12 RBI. He is 5-for-7 in stolen bases and has compiled four two-hit games in the last two weeks.

Incoming freshman infielder Kyle Mariconz ports a .299 average for the Eau Claire Express with six doubles, a home run and 20 RBI. He has 13 multi-hit games this season and went 4-for-5 with a double against Waterloo on July 12.

Three other Mustangs, all pitchers, also are on the Eau Claire roster.

Erich Uelmen is 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA, notching 34 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings. He pitched seven scoreless innings for the win against Rochester on July 23 with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Michael Gomez sports a 3-1 record and 4.40 ERA for the Express with 28 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings. He allowed one run and four hits over six innings for the win at Waterloo on July 12 with two walks and six strikeouts.

Cameron Cotton has not pitched since July 10. In five relief appearances, Cotton pitched 12 2/3 scoreless innings, including a five-inning scoreless stint, allowing two hits, in a win against Waterloo on June 24.

Also in the Northwoods League, infielder Michael Sanderson, an incoming transfer from Feather River College, is hitting .261 for the Battle Creek Bombers with three doubles, a triple, one home run, eight RBI and two steals. He went 4-for-6 with three RBI at Waterloo on July 4.

In addition to Barbier, four other Mustangs are playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues.

Outfielder John Schuknecht is hitting .205 with a double, triple and four RBI in 17 games.

Two incoming freshmen playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues this summer are Robert Ay (3-2, 2.87 ERA, 26 strikeouts over 37 2/3 innings) and Nigel Ward (1-1, 3.86 ERA). Ay, from El Toro High School, allowed three runs and struck out three over five innings for a win against the Pacific Union Financial Capitalists on July 28 while Ward, from Servite High School, allowed just two earned runs in five innings with two strikeouts for a win against the California Expos on June 21.

In addition, Cal Poly football linebacker Burt De Koning is playing baseball for the Blues, hitting .327 over 21 games so far with four doubles, two triples and 10 RBI. He is 9-for-22 (.409) over his last seven games with the Blues.

A dozen returning and incoming Mustangs are playing in the West Coast League up in the Pacific Northwest.

Pitchers Slater Lee and Justin Calomeni, named to the West Coast League's all-star squads earlier this month, both sport 2-1 win-loss records this summer.

Lee, who is playing for the Corvallis Knights this summer, has a 2.26 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings. He has pitched in eight games with six starts and was named WCL co-player of the week after tossing a complete-game shutout against Kitsap on July 10 at Goss Stadium on the Oregon State campus. A junior-to-be at Cal Poly, Lee scattered four hits while walking none and striking out three in the 1-0 victory.

Lee faced just 29 batters and tossed 97 pitches in the 1-hour, 43-minute contest.

Calomeni has compiled a 2.82 ERA at Bellingham. He has struck out 23 in 22 1/3 innings over five appearances on the mound (four starts). On July 16 against Victoria, Calomeni allowed two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts for the victory.

Redshirt freshman Austin Dondanville, pitching for Victoria, is 3-2 with one save and a 2.62 ERA. He has struck out 32 batters over 44 2/3 innings, making six starts among his 11 appearances on the mound.

Dondanville allowed one run and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings for the win against Bellingham on July 22. The right-hander from Walnut Creek, Calif., only allowed one run over 11 innings pitched while striking out nine and giving up 13 hits in wins over Kitsap on July 6 and Klamath Falls on July 12.

Mustang outfielder Josh George is hitting .273 for Corvallis with five steals and four RBI while incoming freshman Craig Colen is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA at Corvallis, striking out eight over 13 1/3 innings. All 10 of his mound appearances have been in relief.

At Bellingham with Calomeni, Spencer Howard has a 1-0 record, one save and a 2.63 ERA this summer. The Templeton High School graduate pitched two scoreless innings for a victory against the San Francisco Seals on July 11 and has struck out 18 batters over 13 2/3 innings in 11 relief appearances.

Pitcher Jarred Zill is 1-3 with a 3.33 ERA at Walla Walla, striking out 29 over 27 innings. He pitched six scoreless frames in a no-decision July 22 against Kelowna, striking out six with no walks.

Andrew Bernstein is 2-4 with a 2.70 ERA at Yakima Valley, notching 17 strikeouts in 40 innings. The sophomore-to-be tossed eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over Medford on July 29 with two walks and three strikeouts.

Transfer Brett Binning, an infielder at Chabot College last spring, is hitting .219 at Klamath Falls with five doubles and four RBI while incoming freshman catcher Nick Meyer is hitting .227 with a double and five RBI at Victoria.

Outfielder Alex McKenna, an Alemany High School graduate, is playing in USA Baseball's 17-and-Under National Team Development Program while Mustang third baseman Alec Smith is playing for the Centennial State League champion Loveland Blue Jays in Colorado.

Infielder Dylan Doherty, a Foothill High School (Santa Ana) graduate, is on the roster of the Southern California Renegades. Other Mustang newcomers playing this summer include pitcher Michael Clark (Menlo Legends) and pitcher Thomas Triantos (Menlo Legends).

Clark has a 2-0 record and 2.81 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 16 innings. Both of his wins were against the Pacific Union Financial Capitalists. Triantos is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA, striking out nine in 11 innings.

Not playing this summer are outfielders Kevin Morgan and Connor O'Hare, pitcher Kyle Smith and catcher Jake Lesinski.
