Pair of Mustang Pitchers Named to West Coast League All-Star Teams

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly pitchers Slater Lee and Justin Calomeni have been named to the West Coast League's all-star squads.

Lee (pictured at right), who is playing for the Corvallis Knights this summer, will pitch for the South All-Stars while Calomeni, playing for the Bellingham Bells, is on the North All-Stars roster. The game will be played July 20 in Bellingham, Wash.

In addition, Lee was named WCL co-player of the week after tossing a complete-game shutout against Kitsap on July 10 at Goss Stadium on the Oregon State campus. A junior-to-be at Cal Poly, Lee scattered four hits while walking none and striking out three in the 1-0 victory.

Lee faced just 29 batters and tossed 97 pitches in the 1-hour, 43-minute contest.

Lee went 1-1 over 10 appearances and three starts this past season as a sophomore at Cal Poly. The Carlsbad, Calif., native is 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA over six appearances and four starts with the Knights the summer.

Lee's Mustang and Knight teammate, redshirt frosh Austin Dondanville of Victoria, also turned in a stellar week, earning two wins over two starts for the red-hot HarbourCats, who were 6-0 for the week. The right-hander from Walnut Creek, Calif., only allowed one run over 11 innings pitched while striking out nine and giving up 13 hits in wins over Kitsap on July 6 and Klamath Falls on July 12.

Calomeni is 1-0 with a 1.45 ERA at Bellingham. He has struck out 13 in 12 1/3 innings over three appearances on the mound.

Mustang outfielder Josh George is hitting .254 for Corvallis with five steals and three RBI while eight other current or incoming Mustang players are playing in the West Coast League with Lee, Calomeni, Dondanville and George.

At Bellingham with Calomeni, Spencer Howard has a 1-0 record, one save and a 1.74 ERA this summer. The Templeton High School graduate pitched two scoreless innings for a victory against the San Francisco Seals on July 11.

Pitcher Jarred Zill is 1-2 with a 2.29 ERA at Walla Walla, striking out 15 over 15 2/3 innings, while Andrew Bernstein is 2-2 with a 2.25 ERA at Yakima Valley, notching 13 strikeouts in 24 innings. Transfer Brett Binning, an infielder at Chabot College this spring, is hitting .230 at Klamath Falls with five doubles and four RBI.

Outfielder Ben Polshuk is hitting .243 for Victoria with one double, one home run and one steal. He hit a two-run home run July 14 at Medford.

Five Mustangs are playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues.

Catcher Brett Barbier sports a .342 average with four doubles and 11 RBI in 13 games. He was the subject of a feature story in the San Luis Obispo Tribune last week. Barbier has been selected to play in the California Collegiate League All-Star Game, scheduled for July 15 in Compton.

Outfielder John Schuknecht is hitting .214 with a double, triple and three RBI, also in 13 games, for the Blues.

Two incoming freshmen playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues this summer are Robert Ay (2-2, 3.71 ERA, 21 strikeouts over 26 2/3 innings) and Nigel Ward (1-1, 5.79 ERA). Ay, from El Toro High School, pitched six scoreless innings with two strikeouts for a victory June 20 against the California Expos while Ward, from Servite High School, allowed just two earned runs in five innings with two strikeouts for a win the next night, also against the Expos.

In addition, Cal Poly football linebacker Burt De Koning is playing baseball for the Blues, hitting .267 over 14 games so far with four doubles, a triple and six RBI.

Austin Kron is hitting .500 in 11 games for the Alameda Merchants with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and seven stolen bases. He went 4-for-5 with one RBI at Humboldt on July 5.

Pitching for the Eau Claire Express in the Northwoods League, Michael Gomez is 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA, striking out 20 batters in 23 innings. He pitched six scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out four against Waterloo on June 23, six more scoreless frames with four hits and seven strikeouts in a no-decision at the Wisconsin Rapids on June 29, and faced Waterloo again on July 12, allowing one run and four hits in six innings with six strikeouts for another win.

Cameron Cotton has pitched 12 2/3 scoreless innings in five relief appearances at Eau Claire, including a five-inning scoreless stint, allowing two hits, in a win against Waterloo on June 24.

Erich Uelmen is 2-0 with a 2.54 ERA at Eau Claire. In 17 2/3 innings over four appearances, he has struck out 16 batters. Against Willmar on July 2, Uelmen tossed six scoreless innings with one hit and six strikeouts in a no-decision.

Outfielder Kyle Mariconz, an incoming freshman from Valley Christian High School in San Jose, is hitting .358 for Eau Claire with six doubles, a home run, 15 RBI and two stolen bases. He has 10 multi-hit games this season and a current 10-game hitting streak, going 18-for-39 (.462). In his last four games, Mariconz is 10-for-19 (.526) with two doubles and four RBI.

Infielder Michael Sanderson, an incoming transfer from Feather River College, is hitting .256 for the Battle Creek Bombers with three doubles, a triple, one home run, eight RBI and two steals. He went 4-for-6 with three RBI at Waterloo on July 4.

Outfielder Alex McKenna, an Alemany High School graduate, is playing in USA Baseball's 17-and-Under National Team Development Program while Mustang third baseman Alec Smith is playing for the Loveland Blue Jays in Colorado.

Infielder Dylan Doherty, a Foothill High School (Santa Ana) graduate, is on the roster of the Southern California Renegades. Other Mustang newcomers playing this summer include pitcher Michael Clark (Menlo Legends), pitcher Thomas Triantos (Menlo Legends), pitcher Craig Colen (Corvallis Knights) and catcher Nick Meyer (Victoria HarbourCats).

Not playing this summer are outfielders Kevin Morgan and Connor O'Hare, pitcher Kyle Smith and catcher Jake Lesinski.
