Barbier, Kron, Several Pitchers off to Hot Summer League Starts

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Two Cal Poly catchers are hitting above .300 while a trio of pitchers at Eau Claire are putting up solid numbers in collegiate summer league play.

Brett Barbier (pictured at right) is hitting .333 in eight games for the San Luis Obispo Blues with three doubles and seven RBI. Against the Santa Maria Packers on June 16, Barbier was 3-for-4 with three singles and four RBI.

Austin Kron is hitting .385 in six games for the Alameda Merchants with a double, two RBI and five stolen bases.

Pitching for the Express in the Northwoods League, Michael Gomez is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA, striking out 13 batters in 12 innings. He pitched six scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out four against Waterloo on June 23 and six more scoreless frames with four hits and seven strikeouts in a no-decision at the Wisconsin Rapids on June 29.

Cameron Cotton has pitched nine scoreless innings in three relief appearances at Eau Claire, including a five-inning scoreless stint, allowing two hits, in a win against Waterloo on June 24.

Erich Uelmen is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA. In 6 2/3 innings over two appearances, he has struck out five batters. Against St. Cloud on June 21, Uelmen pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits and three strikeouts for the win.

Outfielder Kyle Mariconz, an incoming freshman from Valley Christian High School in San Jose, is hitting .317 for Eau Claire with two doubles, a home run, eight RBI and two stolen bases. He was 3-for-5 at St. Cloud on June 26.

Mustang outfielder Josh George is hitting .290 for the Corvallis Knights with four steals and one RBI while 10 other current or incoming Mustang players are playing in the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League with George.

On the mound, Justin Calomeni is 1-0 with a 1.58 ERA in two starts for Bellingham, striking out 12 batters in 11 1/3 innings. He pitched five scoreless innings against Walla Walla on June 18, striking out eight in the 1-0 victory. Also at Bellingham, Spencer Howard has no record and a 4.15 ERA with six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings (three relief appearances).

Pitcher Jarred Zill is 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA at Walla Walla, striking out nine over 9 2/3 innings, while Andrew Bernstein is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA at Yakima Valley, notching seven strikeouts in 15 innings. Transfer Brett Binning, an infielder at Chabot College this spring, is hitting .237 at Klamath Falls with three doubles and a pair of RBI.

Also of note, two incoming freshmen playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues this summer are Robert Ay (2-1, 3.63 ERA, 12 strikeouts over 17 1/3 innings) and Nigel Ward (1-0, 3.68 ERA). Ay, from El Toro High School, pitched six scoreless innings with two strikeouts for a victory June 20 against the California Expos while Ward, from Servite High School, allowed just two earned runs in five innings with two strikeouts for a win the next night, also against the Expos.

Junior right-hander Slater Lee has no record and a 2.91 ERA over four appearances on the mound with the Corvallis Knights. He has struck out 11 batters in 12 1/3 innings.

Also playing this summer are outfielder John Schuknecht with the Blues, outfielder Ben Polshuk with the Victoria HarbourCats and pitcher Austin Dondanville with Victoria.

In addition, Cal Poly football linebacker Burt De Koning is playing baseball for the Blues, hitting .276 over 13 games so far with four doubles, a triple and six RBI.

Outfielder Alex McKenna, an Alemany High School graduate, is playing in USA Baseball's 17-and-Under National Team Development Program while Mustang third baseman Alec Smith is playing for the Loveland Blue Jays in Colorado.

Infielder Dylan Doherty, a Foothill High School (Santa Ana) graduate, is on the roster of the Southern California Renegades. Other Mustang newcomers playing this summer include pitcher Michael Clark (Menlo Legends), pitcher Thomas Triantos (Menlo Legends), pitcher Craig Colen (Corvallis Knights) and catcher Nick Meyer (Victoria HarbourCats).

Not playing this summer are outfielders Kevin Morgan and Connor O'Hare, pitcher Kyle Smith and catcher Jake Lesinski.
