No. 7 Mustangs Blank Both Opponents Saturday in Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Cal Poly beach volleyball team swept both of its matches Saturday at the Fight in the Fort Invite hosted by TCU in dominating fashion, blanking Houston Baptist and Central Arkansas, 5-0.

The two wins now make it five in a row for the No. 7 Mustangs (8-5). They now get ready to face the No. 20 Horned Frogs and Texas A&M Corpus Christi to wrap up the tournament Sunday.

In the first match of the day against Houston Baptist, Cal Poly won in straight sets in four of the five matches.

At the No. 1 spot, senior Crissy Jones and sophomore Tiadora Miric had the most impressive win of the day, winning in straight sets, 21-9, 21-9. Freshman Delaney Peranich and sophomore Macy Gordon paired at No. 2, winning 21-16, 21-15. Freshman Vanessa Roscoe and junior Brayden Gruenewald also won in straight sets at the No. 3 position, 21-7, 25-23.

Sophomore Peyton Sper and senior Samantha Manley won their match from the No. 4 slot, 21-19, 21-13. The No. 5 pairing of freshman Jayelin Lombard and senior Kat Wright (pictured) made it a clean sweep with a three set win, 21-18, 19-21, 15-8.

Against Central Arkansas, three of the five matches went three sets, with the Mustangs coming out on top in all of them. At the No. 1 spot, Jones and Miric continued their strong play with a 21-9, 21-19 win. The duo is 7-3 so far this season, tied for the most wins by a pair on the team.

Roscoe and Gruenewald, this time at the No. 2 position, won in three sets, 19-21, 21-15, 15-6. They are now 5-3 as a pairing this season. Peranich and Gordon won their match as the No. 3 pairing in straight sets, 21-17, 21-17. This was the first two matches the pair has played together this season.

At the No. 4 spot, Lombard and Wright won in three sets, 21-11, 17-21, 15-10. They are also now 7-3 as a pair this season, tying for the most wins by a pair on the team. The No. 5 pairing of Sper and Manley finished off the sweep with a three set win, 15-21, 21-19, 15-6.

Sunday's matches against the No. 20 Horned Frogs and Texas A&M Corpus Christi start at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. PT.
