MALIBU, Calif. — Playing a pair of matches Wednesday, the seventh-ranked Cal Poly beach volleyball program fell to both No. 13 Loyola Marymount, 4-1 and No. 5 Pepperdine, 3-2 at the Waves Invite hosted by the latter.

The No. 7 Mustangs (3-5) began the day against the Lions (4-7). In that match, LMU picked up wins at the fourth, third and first positions to secure the win.

The Mustangs then took on the No. 5 Waves (11-4), nearly completing a comeback victory. After Pepperdine picked up wins at the three and four positions to take a 2-0 lead, Cal Poly came roaring back to tie the score.

The Mustangs' No. 4 pairing of senior Kat Wright and freshman Jayelin Lombard got things started with a 18-21, 21-13, 15-7 win over the Waves' Maddie Dilfer and Nikki Lyons.

Cal Poly's No. 1 pairing of graduate senior Crissy Jones and sophomore Tiadora Miric then tied things at two with a 21-19, 27-25 win over Brook Bauer and Deahna Kraft.

The Mustangs' No. 5 pairing of junior Heather Pembroke and sophomore Sjea Anderson were then just edged out in three sets 21-15, 19-21, 15-12.
