Home to Cal Poly Track & Field, Steve Miller and John Capriotti Athletics Complex was inaugurated with the 36th annual Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational on Saturday, March 24, 2018.

Beynon Sports installed a new track surface (opening up the potential for Cal Poly to host Big West Conference Championship meets in the decade ahead), and a newly renovated Bermuda field was put into place inside the oval.

The facility was dedicated midway through Cal Poly’s home invitational (founded on a yearly basis in 1983 as the Poly Royal Invitational), with a ceremony honoring Miller (Mustang head coach from 1976-81; Chairman of the Board of Directors for USATF since 2015) and Capriotti (an All-American for the Mustangs in 1978; Nike Vice President and Global Director of Athletics/Running Track and Field since 2010) — each of whom were leading donors toward the renovation.

In addition to Oregon — site of the 2021 IAAF World Games — Harvard, Yale, Stanford, USC, Ohio State, Auburn and Florida State are among the collegiate track & field programs also featuring Beynon surfaces. Meanwhile, the re-balanced infield’s drought-tolerant Bandera Bermuda grass is also used at Levi’s Stadium, Dodger Stadium, PETCO Park, StubHub Center and Home Depot Center.

In association with Cal Poly Corporation, Associated Students, Inc. and Cal Poly Housing, the $1.6 million project was part of the comprehensive reshaping of the southeast corner of campus from Longview Lane to Grand Avenue, alongside neighboring Doerr Family Field adjacent to a new 435,000-square-foot student housing site.
