Mary Lou White is recognized as the individual most responsible for the development of women's athletics at Cal Poly.

Mary coached women's volleyball, basketball, softball, track and men's and women's fencing. She was also instrumental in the development of women's competition among California State Universities and was a committee member for the development of the nationally recognized Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Mary Lou worked hard on the development of Title IX Legislation which led to equal opportunity for women athletic participants. Mary Lou served as department head of Women's Physical Education, Women's Athletic Director and held the title of Associate Dean of the School of Human Development and Education.

White, who passed away in April of 2007, resided in Morro Bay where she was a volunteer patrolman with the San Luis County Sheriff's Department and played percussion in a dance band.
