By many, Jim Schankel is recognized as the greatest distance runner to ever compete for Cal Poly.

Jim was a dominate performer and almost single-handedly led Cal Poly to two national cross-country titles and two national track and field championships. He personally captured eight individual national titles in track and cross-country.

Jim collected 12 All-American awards while competing for the Mustangs and still holds numerous records at Cal Poly. Jim is in the record books in the 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000-meter runs, as well as the two-, three-, and six-mile events.
