Gene was a dominant swimmer in the California State College Swimming Championships, winning titles in three different events for four consecutive years. While at Cal Poly, he held 14 individual records. He was the university's first All-American swimmer. In 1959, he competed on the National team in the Pan American Games and in 1960 represented the United States in the Olympic Games.

Gene did three tours of duty in Vietnam in the late 1960s. In 1972, he joined the Fluor Corporation working in construction management in Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and the United States. In 1988, he retired from construction. He worked part-time as a stockbroker with Maguire Investments in Santa Maria.

Gene, who passed away in October 2005, and his wife Ethel have two children and three grandchildren. The family resided in Arroyo Grande.
