In her three years as a varsity basketball starter, Laura set 27 school records and averaged more than 20 points a game. She was an All-League performer for three years, was recognized as the Most Valuable Player in the CCAA and was selected to represent the USA team for the Jones Cup played in Taiwan. Laura received All-American status in 1981 and was also recognized as an Academic All-American in 1982 with a 3.95 GPA in Biology.

Dr. Buehning received her M.D. degree from University of California, San Diego. She is presently working as a dermatologist in a group practice in San Diego. She is also an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego, medical school.

She and her husband William Gallego, reside in San Diego where she is involved with city recreational basketball and soccer. She takes time to hike and bicycle regularly.
