Gary Vardanyan, Freshman, Nos. 4-5 Singles, 5-9, 175, Granada Hills, CA | Granada Hills Charter High School
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After going a combined 4-0 in both singles and doubles over the weekend during the Cal Poly men’s tennis program’s three matches at the Arthur Ashe Invitational hosted by Army, freshman Gary Vardanyan has been named both the Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week and the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Vardanyan helped the Mustangs to two wins over Army and Michigan State. He went 3-0 in singles at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions and won his sole doubles match, pairing with senior Dominic Bechard at the No. 3 spot in a win over the Spartans.
He is off to a strong start to his Mustang career. So far this season, he has only dropped one set in the three singles wins.
Cal Poly has won two straight matches after beating the host Black Knights 4-2 and the Spartans 4-3 and are now 2-1 on the young season.
The Mustangs take to the road once again this weekend when they travel to Los Angeles for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at USC. They will face the No. 5 Trojans Saturday at 1 p.m. and both South Alabama and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
