Elizabeth Scholtes, Freshman, 5-2, Alameda, Calif. | Alameda High School
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Freshman golfer Elizabeth Scholtes, who fired an opening-round 68 on her way to a first-place tie in the Battle at the Rock last week near Riverside, Calif., has been selected as the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Scholtes added back-to-back rounds of 72 and shared medalist honors with USC individual Alyaa Abdulghany with four-under-par 212 totals over 54 holes.
Abdulghany took home the first-place trophy by winning a playoff against Scholtes on the second hole. "Alyaa made a birdie and Elizabeth's putt lipped out," said Mustang head coach Sofie Aagaard.
"Elizabeth finishing in a tie for first was amazing," Aagaard added. "She played very consistent through the event and was able to make a lot of birdies in her second round."
Scholtes and Courtney Vogel of Grand Canyon both made 14 birdies in the two-day tournament, sharing first place. Scholtes also was fourth in par-3 scoring at even par, fifth in par-4 scoring at one under par and fourth in par-5 scoring at three under par.
Scholtes’ performance helped Cal Poly to a second-place team finish, just one stroke behind Grand Canyon.
Cal Poly returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Bruin-Wave Invitational co-hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
