SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After his wire-to-wire championship-winning performance Saturday at Carbon Canyon Park to capture the Big West Conference individual cross country title by almost 12 seconds, Mustang sophomore Jake Ritter was selected as the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Ritter, a graduate of Granite Bay High via Citrus Heights, Calif., took off from the gun in Brea, running the 8k course in 24 minutes, 27.5 seconds.
He finished 11.6 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Ritter’s finish was the start of a Cal Poly sweep on the day, as the Mustangs proceeded to win the men’s team championship (the program’s third in a row) with a score of 32 points, before the women’s squad led by Miranda Daschian’s 6k title of 21:23.1 (beating the field by 3.4 seconds) followed with another trophy (their third in four years) thanks to 33 points.
Cal Poly will next prepare for the NCAA West Regional Championships. Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento will host the next stop of the postseason, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 beginning at 11 a.m.
