SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior wrestler Tom Lane, who finished sixth in the 56th annual Midlands Championships at 197 pounds, has been selected as the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
Lane earned three victories in four matches on the opening day of the two-day tournament Saturday, posting wins by technical fall, medical forfeit and a major decision.
On Sunday, Lane needed one victory to guarantee placement and, seeded eighth in his weight class, upset No. 5-seeded Austin Davison of Michigan in a 4-2 decision. He then went on to defeat Brett Perry of Buffalo 11-6.
Lane was forced to forfeit his next two matches due to injury, settling for sixth place in the 35-team event held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, just outside Chicago, Illinois.
Lane, who was 16-11 and an NCAA qualifier a year ago, sports a 13-8 record for the current season.
Cal Poly hosts CSU Bakersfield on Friday, Jan. 11, for a Pac-12 dual meet at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
