SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- After averaging 14.5 points and 5.5 assists per game during four outings last week, men’s basketball senior guard Donovan Fields was named Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Big West Conference’s sixth-leading scorer at 15.8 points per game this season, Fields opened last week with a 22-point, seven-assist effort in Cal Poly’s 84-70 loss at Washington State (Nov. 19).
Two nights later during Cal Poly’s Portland Classic tournament opener versus Texas State, Fields scored 11 points and produced four steals. Following a five-assist effort in Cal Poly’s Nov. 23 loss at Portland, Fields closed the Portland Classic with a 21-point, seven-assist performance as the Mustangs rallied to edge USC Upstate in overtime, 75-74 (Nov. 24).
Having averaged 12.0 points and 5.0 assists per game during the Portland Classic, Fields earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
With his 58-point effort last week, Fields now requires just 141 more points to become the 24th player in program history to reach 1,000.
As a program, Cal Poly (2-4) closes its six-game road trip versus Fresno State on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tip time from the Save Mart Center is 12 noon.
