Diego Alonso, Junior, Midfielder, 5-6, Berkeley, Calif. | San Jose Earthquakes Academy
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- After scoring the deciding goal in the Cal Poly men’s soccer program’s 1-0 Blue-Green rivalry matchup in front of a sellout crowd of 11,075 fans inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday, junior midfielder Diego Alonso has been named Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
With the match scoreless into the 64th minute, Mustang senior defender Nick Carroll took a pass from senior midfielder Joe Rivera and distributed the ball to Alonso.
With his second shot of the evening, Alonso's attempt deflected off a UC Santa Barbara defender, over the arms of Gaucho goalkeeper Ben Roach and under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.
For Alonso, the goal marked just his second in 34 career appearances as a Mustang. Both of Alonso’s goal have come this season and have been game-winning efforts. A starter in eight of nine matches for Cal Poly, Alonso ranks second in the lineup with six points.
The Sept. 30 crowd figure matched the 14th largest regular season crowd figure in NCAA history and was the highest NCAA crowd of 2018. It also marked the eighth consecutive season that Cal Poly's matchup versus UC Santa Barbara at Spanos Stadium has sold out.
Cal Poly (4-4-1) opens Big West Conference action with a 3 p.m. matchup at No. 17 UC Davis on Wednesday.
