Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Joe Protheroe

Joe Protheroe, Senior, Fullback, 5-11, 230, Concord, Calif. | Clayton Valley Charter High School

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Following his third consecutive 200-yard game and eighth straight over the 100-yard mark en route to a new single-season Mustang rushing record, senior fullback Joe Protheroe is the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time in the 2018 football season.

Named Big Sky Offensive player of the week on Monday for the second time this season and for the fourth time in his Mustang career, Protheroe continued his assault on the Cal Poly record book as he claimed the single-season mark during a 37-14 Homecoming victory over Idaho State on Saturday.

Needing 211 yards to catch James Noble's 1,578-yard record, Protheroe rushed for 260 yards on 41 carries against the Bengals.

Protheroe now has 1,627 yards for the year with one game remaining Saturday against Southern Utah at 4:05 p.m. inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

The Clayton Valley Charter (Concord, Calif.) graduate also has 4,088 yards for his career at Cal Poly, becoming only the second Mustang to surpass the 4,000-yard mark. Protheroe needs 118 yards to break the school record of 4,205 set by Craig Young from 1996-99.

For Protheroe, he has eight consecutive 100-yard games this season and a total of 22 for his career, another school record. He has rushed for over 200 yards in each of his last three games, four times this season and five in his career.

The leading rusher in the Football Championship Subdivision as well as in the Big Sky, Protheroe scored once on a one-yard dive in the second quarter, giving Cal Poly the lead for good at 13-7. He has 13 touchdowns this season and 35 for his career, three shy of the school record.

Protheroe is No. 2 among active career rushers in the FCS with his 4,088 yards, behind only Dominick Bragalone of Lehigh (4,229 yards).
