SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly junior catcher Nick Meyer, who went 9-for-17 last week with three doubles, five runs scored and three RBI, has been selected as the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
On Monday, Meyer also earned Big West Conference Field Player of the Week honors, Cal Poly's first-such honoree for the 2018 season.
Meyer, currently hitting .335 with one more week to go in the 2018 season, opened a four-game week with Cal Poly's first five-hit game in five years, going 5-for-6 against Pepperdine last Tuesday. All five hits were singles. The last Mustang to collect five hits in a game was Denver Chavez with three singles and a pair of doubles against UC Santa Barbara on April 7, 2013.
Over the weekend, Meyer went 4-for-11 against UC Santa Barbara with three doubles, completing a week in which he hit .529 and led the Mustangs to their first perfect 4-0 week of the season.
Meyer's two-run double in the eighth inning Saturday turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead and Cal Poly went on to win 4-2 to clinch the series. He doubled twice in Sunday's 9-3 triumph to complete Cal Poly's third consecutive sweep against the Gauchos.
Meyer has gone 41-for-104 (.394) at the plate over his last 24 games, lifting his average from .273 to its present .335.
The Santa Margarita Catholic High School graduate is one of three Mustangs with 14 doubles and he has driven in 27 runs. He is third in the conference in toughest to strike out (once every 11.3 at-bats) and also is among the conference leaders in fielding chances, putouts, average, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, doubles and sacrifice bunts.
Junior southpaw Clayton Andrew of Long Beach State, who threw seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit in a win over Hawai'i, was named Big West Pitcher of the Week for the third straight week.
Cal Poly, 27-27 overall and 12-9 for a second-place tie with UC Irvine in the Big West standings, plays its final three games of the 2018 season Thursday through Saturday at UC Riverside.
