Cal Poly to Host 2013 Big West Cross Country Championships
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly men's cross country team will be looking for its 13th Big West Conference Cross Country title while the Cal Poly women's team will be going after its fourth on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course. The men's race is scheduled to start at 9:45 am followed by the women at 10:40 am.
The Fairbanks Memorial Cross Country Course is located on Hwy 1, opposite the North entrance to Cuesta College on Education Dr. Spectator parking will be at Cuesta College (permit required).
The men's team enters the race having won the last two Big West championships and nine of the last 10. Cal Poly is led this season by two-time Big West Conference Athlete of the Week, senior Sean Davidson. The senior is coming off a 17th place at the Pre Nationals in Terre Haute where he led the Mustangs to a 12th place finish. Davidson covered the 8k NCAA Championship course in 23:47 in winning his second Big West award. He was honored the first time when he finished second at the NCAA West Regional Pre View in Sacramento on Oct. 4. Davidson finished with a time of 23:30.
Fellow senior Chris Frias has been solid all season for the Mustangs, finishing as the first or second Mustang in each of his races this season. The 2012 BWC champion was the top Cal Poly runner in the first two races season, UCSB Lagoon Open (2nd, 24:25) and the Fresno State Invitational (1st, 19:15). Frias finished two spots back of Davidson at the West Regional Pre View, in fourth (23:36) and was 39th (24:06) at the Pre Nationals.
Junior Mitch Moriarty has consistently been the No. 3 runner for the Mustangs this season with his season-opening fifth place finish at the Lagoon Open (25:19). He followed that up with a third at the Fresno State Invitational (19:34) and a 13th at the NCAA West Pre View (23:58). In his last outing, the Pre Nationals, he finished 63rd with a time of 24:18.
Also expected to compete for the Mustangs; sophomore Kyle Lynch, freshmen Dimitri Voytilla, Clayton Hutchins, Tyler Huntley and Nick Woolf.
The Cal Poly women's team looking for its second straight Big West Conference title and its fourth title overall. Expected to compete and lead the team is returning Big West Conference Champion and conference record holder, sophomore Laura Hollander. The 2012 All-American has competed in only one race this season, the Lagoon Open, winning in a course record time of 16:36. Last season she dominated the season, winning the Big West Conference Championship and athlete of the year. She concluded the season finishing ninth at the NCAA Championships, earning All-American status.
At the NCAA Pre Nationals on Oct. 19, the Mustangs were led by senior transfer Diana George (76th, 21:17) who has surged late in the season. George finished 18th at the NCAA West Pre View (17:20) in only other race of the season.
Sophomore Mary Jo Wright has had a solid season as Cal Poly's top finisher at the Pre View (9th) and a time of 17:08. She was the second Mustang to cross the line at the Pre Nationals in 104th with a time 21:30.
Freshman Ashley Windsor has made her presents known with her 105th place finish at the Pre Nationals (21:30) and a 14th place finish at the Pre View (17:13). She also posted a time of 18:26 at the Fresno State Invitational (6th).
Also expected to compete for the Mustangs in the conference championship; sophomores Rachel Bush, Ashley Bergstrom and Sara Van Dyke and junior Hanna Edwards.
